Innovative Geo-Joist Pile-Supported Foundation at the U of R Catholic Center in Rochester NY

When a leading general contractor needed an efficient solution for the U of R Catholic Center in Rochester, NY, they turned to CMI Structural Solutions. Faced with challenging fill soils, we delivered a cost-effective Geo-Joist and helical pile foundation system.

Project Background

Located in Rochester, NY, the U of R Catholic Center project demanded a reliable foundation system. The general contractor required a solution that could handle the site's uncontrolled fill soils without the need for extensive excavation.

Challenge – Soils and Schedule

The site presented uncontrolled fill soils, necessitating an over-excavation of up to 8 feet, which was not a viable option due to the high costs associated. Instead, our task was to provide a shallow, frost-protected, pile-supported foundation system that mitigated these expenses while adhering to a tight schedule.

Solution – Helical Piles and Geo-Joist Structural Slab

CMI installed 3-1/2" galvanized helical piles with 8"/10" helices, achieving a design working load of 56 kips per pile. With a typical embedment depth of 10 feet, the 108 piles laid the groundwork for an 8,800 Sq ft Geo-Joist structural slab. This innovative approach required minimal excavation and provided essential frost protection.

Results and Benefits

The completed foundation system delivered minimal excavations and fast construction, with the entire project finished in just three and a half weeks. This solution not only controlled costs and saved time but also enhanced energy efficiency—a key benefit for the client.

For engineers and general contractors in Upstate NY facing similar challenges, CMI Structural Solutions offers innovative and cost-effective foundation solutions.
